Creating a Corpus-Based Teaching Material

Hello everyone
I hope you’re fine and ready to learn something new! As for me, my exams ended a week ago, but I still feel exhausted. However, since it has been a semester nearly full of assignments, I know I must keep going💪.  Today, I want to share my experiences as an assignment about how my friends created a teaching material and lesson plan using the ASSURE model and a linguistic tool, COCA (Corpus of Contemporary American English) to help students learn the difference between say and tell.  The lesson encourages exploration and critical thinking, making it more engaging for the students.
We started by choosing our vocabulary items: say-tell from the MEB coursebook. Then, as a corpus, we chose COCA. Our objective was for students to be able to distinguish between them using real-life examples to make learning easier after completing the material with the help of COCA.
In our lesson plan, we combined teacher-led instruction with student-centered activities. Students first explored examples from the corpus to understand the rules behind using say-and-tell. Then, they applied what they’ve learned through practical exercises and discussions.
However, there may be some potential challenges. First, not all students may be familiar with COCA, so there might be some initial confusion about how to use the tool. Also, some students might face technical issues, such as not having access to digital devices or encountering problems with the internet connection.

What are your thoughts on our corpus based teaching material? Is it useful or not? I eagerly await your comments. See you in the next post. Take care.
